Day 8: Pizza Worthy of Our Last Meal

Mile 1581: On our way to Missoula

We left Big Sky after checking our route to ensure it was wildfire free. While the highways were open, the smoke made us close our windows passing through Gallatin National Forest.

Mile 1610: It was a quiet, boring ride until we saw a crop duster causing a stir on I90.

Mile 1674: Butte, MT

Again consulting our Road Food guide, we stopped in Butte, MT for lunch. It was a little place called Matt's Drive in. Lots of character.

Inside at Matt's

This is James' Fried Pork Chop Sandwich... the menu didn't say fried... and James ' stomach made noises about it the rest of the day

Outside view of Matt's. It wasn't a drive in.

Mile 1714: Deer Lodge, MT
Back on the road. With nothing else to do, I check my "Roadside America" app. It tells me about an old prison museum in Deer Lodge. We decide to stop. It was a pretty cool place with a lot of history.

We were 'handcuffed'

Inside the prison block

Inside the tiny prison cell.

After more scenery and another hour, we arrive in Missoula. Missoula is a small city of about 67,000. We made a torturous stop at a fly fishing store so James could determine where to fish tomorrow, then called a taxi to take us downtown (all hotels downtown were booked- a danger of being impulsive hippies).

First stop- The Iron Horse. A strange occurrence happened when we were there. A large glass jar on the bar spontaneously broke. There was no explanation. The bartender said something similar happened last week. He attributes it to the ghost of Iron Horse. (insert creepy music here).

Yes, I had a wine at the brew pub

They actually had this sign outside of the bar on the street. I forgot to take a picture of that, but this will have to do.

We then went to Bob Marshall's Biga Pizza. Ok. When I researched restaurants and cities for our trip, the only place I HAD to visit was Biga Pizza. The reviews, the menu, all sounded amazing. I talked about coming here for over a month. When expectations are that high, disappointment usually follows. That was not the case at all. Who would have thought such amazing pizza would be here in Missoula, MT. I rated this my 3rd favorite pizza ever. James rated it as his #1. That is big.

Panzanella Salad.

Trout Slayer- ok beer, great name

We forgot to take the picture before we started eating- again. Pepperoni, prosciutto, mozzarella, and mascarpone. Yum.

At the end of the night, we received job offers!!! Our taxi driver has another car and another shift. We are considering... the pizza was that good...

Tomorrow- Whitewater rafting on the Clark Fork River
